FOCUS: the concentration or attention of energy on something.
Focus is something we all wish we were better at. It’s that state of being ‘in the zone’ and getting the most done you can while delivering the best work you can. The problem? Not many of us are good at actually focusing and dialing in at the task at hand, you know without checking your phone or email every 5 minutes. So I've compiled a list of 4 tips that help me get in the zone, stay in the zone and get stuff done fast!
Find Your Space
One of the most important things you can do when trying to focus is to find a space where it’s easy to focus! No distractions or anything that will keep your attention off of your work. This may be a coffee shop, a library or even here at the Underground. The point is, find that space that makes you feel good, gives you great vibes, and allows you to completely focus on the task at hand.
Know Your Peak Productivity Time
It is so important to know when you are the most productive. For some people this may be first thing in the morning or maybe even very late at night. Whatever time this is, take full advantage of it! Use your natural peak times to get the most work done possible. The point here is to know yourself and learn your natural rhythm. Do the most mundane tasks during your non-peak productive hours and your big projects when you can zone in. And when you zone in, I mean you are actually getting work done and being productive, not just busy (there’s a huggeeee difference).
Use the 3:1 Principle
So the 3:1 principle goes something like this: work for 45 minutes without ANY and ALL distractions, then take a 15 minute break to give yourself time to unwind. The point here is to complete block out the outside world during your ‘focus’ period. Shut off all electronics, turn off the outside world and do not respond to emails! (Unless it’s essential for your task at hand). In your ‘rest’ period you can get up, walk around, check your phone, etc.
Treat Your Body & Mind Right
Eat better foods, get better sleep. No, you don’t have to go on a strict diet and go to bed at 8PM to treat your body and mind right. Just make sure your getting your 7-8 hours of sleep as well as making healthier choices when eating. You will feel the difference after a few days and you’ll have more energy and a clearer mind to hone in your focus and accomplish your biggest tasks!
